Understanding Compostable Certifications

📝

With the growing demand for sustainable packaging, it's important to understand what "compostable" really means. Various certifications help consumers and businesses identify truly eco-friendly products.

What is Compostability?

Compostable materials break down into natural elements within a composting environment, leaving no toxic residue. Unlike biodegradable materials (which can break down in various conditions), compostable materials require specific conditions to decompose properly.

Key Certifications

OK Compost

This certification from Vincotte ensures products will compost in industrial composting facilities. It includes both OK Compost and OK Compost HOME certifications.

EN 13432

A European standard that requires packaging to biodegrade at least 90% within 6 months in industrial composting. It's one of the most rigorous standards worldwide.

ASTM D6400

The American Society for Testing and Materials standard for labeling plastics as compostable in municipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities.
